Course information

Which measures are effective in reducing the burden of disease associated with disorders such as depression, Alzheimer's disease, or ADHD? Which measures could lead to a more sustainable healthcare system? Answers to questions like these require thoughtful, empirically adequate and responsive evaluations of alternative and innovative strategies. They also require the integration of empirical and normative inquiries. ln healthcare, we  are becoming increasingly aware of the limitations of conventional evaluation approaches in answering  complex questions. As an alternative, participatory evaluation, approaches have been developed that involve multiple stakeholders. ln this novel approach, evaluation is considered a process in which scientists, decision-makers, and advocates communicate to identify relevant questions for analysis, to increase ownership of the evaluation and the results it produces. The emphasis here is on evaluation as a social learning process. By involving stakeholders we can increase the relevance of an evaluation, and implementation of the recommendation may be more effective.

Course content

Our faculty consists of researchers with ample experience in the field of participatory evaluation. Guest lectures will be held by leading evaluation scientists. During the course, you will apply the novel methodology to a case study and present your results on the final day. The course is supplemented with e-learning material developed under the auspices of Health Technology Assessment international. The course is closely affiliated with the research programme at the Radboud Institute for Health Sciences (RIHS) and reflects one of the core objectives of Radboud university medical centre: patient-centred care.

Target group

The course is designed for students with a basic knowledge of the theory and practice of evaluation, as obtained through a BSc or MSc in Health Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Policy Sciences, Science, Technology & Innovation Studies or equivalent, and for (non) profit professionals who conduct evaluations of healthcare interventions or use their results in decision making.
