Cardiovascular disease claims more lives than any other worldwide. Atherosclerosis, a lipid-driven inflammatory process characterized by progressive leukocyte accumulation in the vessel wall, is frequently the underlying cause of myocardial infarction and stroke. In this talk I will discuss how hematopoietic cells participate in the cardiovascular system. I will elaborate how a family of growth factors influences leukocyte production and function in the blood, vessel wall, and heart. I will draw from our studies utilizing models of sepsis (systemic inflammation), atherosclerosis (vessel wall inflammation), and myocardial infarction (cardiac inflammation). I will provide a general synthesis of the various processes that occur during these seemingly different pathologies and outline the major questions that need to be answered in the future.
