Prof . Kersten LeidenAntigens formulated in bioneedles are a potential alternative delivery system for vaccine delivery by classical needle and syringe injection. Influenza vaccines administered by bioneedles were compared head-to-headin vivowith liquid influenza vaccinations. Bioneedle influenza vaccines induced high HI titers comparable to those after intramuscular WIV vaccination, and significantly increased the immunogenicity of subunit and virosomal vaccines. Further studies revealed that WIV vaccines induced potent T-cell responses that were skewed towards T-helper 1 responses, indicative of a strong cellular immune response. Thein vivoand stability results indicate that bioneedles are an attractive alternative to conventional liquid influenza vaccines, lack the need of a cold-chain and can be used both in epidemic as well as pandemic vaccination campaigns.
