Schermer _BernhardSomatic loss of pVHL is the major cause for renal cancer while germline mutations of VHL can cause a rare genetic tumor syndrome that includes the development of kidney cysts. As an E3 ubiquitin ligase pVHL regulates the degradation of hypoxia-inducible factors HIF1/2 under normoxic conditions. Beyond this classical mechanism, our group could show that pVHL is involved in ciliogenesis and in the regulation of lifespan in C. elegans.
