Gold nanoparticles have been shown to interfere with the function of lung surfactants at low concentration.  It is of interest to understand whether they in turn interact with the epithelial cells of the lung.  In this work, we have presented membrane enveloped gold nanoparticles to A549 cells and studied their uptake and fate in the cell.  This presentation will describe the properties of the membrane gold nanoparticles and their interactions with these cells in culture using fluorescence microscopy among other tools.  We aim to demonstrate that the cells respond by generating lamellar bodies, perhaps as a response to eliminate the particles.
