€ 600,000 EULAR grant for Peter van der Kraan

Kraan, P. vd

Peter van der Kraan, theme Inflammatory diseases has obtained a research grant from European League against Rheumatism (EULAR) of € 600,000. The project "SEN-OA - Targeting senescent cells in osteoarthritis: an innovative therapeutic approach" has been granted by FOREUM (Foundation for Research in Rheumatology, EULAR).

This endeavor is a cooperation between research groups in France, Spain and Nijmegen. Increasing evidence suggests that many chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis (OA) are associated with hallmarks of ageing, including epigenetic alterations, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, altered autophagy and intercellular communication that could promote disease onset. One emerging therapeutic approach for ageing-associated diseases would be to specifically deplete senescent cells to prevent the detrimental secretion of senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) products.
