1. Name & Nationality
Aysel Mammadova, Azerbaijani

2. When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?
A medical doctor. However,  later I was inspired to become a dentist because in my opinion, dentistry is very creative and many-sided medical branch.

3. What was your previous academic training, where did you study?
I have studied dentistry at the Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey.

4. What is your current function and what would you like to achieve?
I am a PhD candidate at the department of Orthodontics and Craniofacial Biology. My research project studies the retinoic acid-mediated mechanisms in the development of cleft lip and palate (CLP). CLP is a common birth defect which causes functional and psychosocial problems and requires a multidisciplinary treatment including several surgical interventions. Retinoic acid (RA), active derivate of vitamin A, regulates differentiation and patterning during embryonic development, and RA receptor knock-out causes CLP in mouse embryos. However, its mechanism and interaction with other signaling pathways involved in palatogenesis is not completely clear yet. Hence, our goal is to better understand the role of RA signaling in palate development.

5. The RIMLS motto is 'to understand molecular mechanisms of disease'. What does this mean for you?
To search for the cause of disease on the deep molecular level.

6. What is the biggest motivation in your work?
To contribute to the understanding of the development of RA-induced CLP and ultimately to reduce its incidence.

7. What is your dream for the future?
In the future I want to help CLP patients in the clinic and to improve their welfare.
