A Personal Touch of Jitske Jansen

Janssen , Jitske

Please learn more about colleagues in our "Personal Touch" series setting employees in the spotlight. A light-hearted manner to learn about the colleagues you know and those you don't!.

This week: Jitske Janssen

1. Name & Nationality
Jitske Jansen, Dutch

2. When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?
As a child my dream was to become a vet to treat dogs or larger animals.

3. What was your previous academic training, where did you study?
I studied in Nijmegen, Higher laboratory Education and graduated in 2005. For several years  I was working as a (research) technician in genetic disorders, medical  microbiology and renal molecular pharmacology and physiology. In 2012 I started  my PhD traject and this period will end in 2015.

4. What is your current function and what would you like to achieve?
Currently I am a PhD student at the department of pharmacology & toxicology in collaboration with the depts. of physiology and pediatrics. We are working on the development of the bioartificial kidney using a human proximal tubule epithelial cell line to optimize current renal replacement therapy. It would be great if we could achieve an up-scaled hollow fiber system which facilitates transport of waste products (i.e. uremic toxins) upon prolonged usage.

5. The RIMLS motto is 'to understand molecular mechanisms of disease'. What does this mean for you?
Elucidating relevant pathways in the excretion of waste products mediated by proximal tubule epithelial cells will contribute in the understanding of the improved  treatment of renal disorders in patients.

6. What is the biggest motivation in your work?
To solve challenging topics in renal bioengineering as well as unraveling molecular mechanisms relevant in renal disease.

7. What is your dream for the future?
I will finish my PhD next year and I would like to continue in academic research. Hopefully I  will manage to obtain funding for future research.
