Ad Verhagen has been appointed Professor in Thoracic Surgery at the Radboud University / the Radboud university medical center Nijmegen, with effect from 1 August 2017.
Verhagen is the first professor of Long Surgery in the Netherlands. Unlike countries with comparable healthcare systems, the Netherlands does not have an independent field of lung surgery. This surgery is performed by general surgeons and cardio-thoracic surgeons. To further the development of the field of study and in the context of the national discussion on concentration of care, the chair of Long Surgery was established.

Lung surgery tradition

Prof. Verhagen’s position falls under Radboud university medical center in Nijmegen, because of its long-standing lung surgery tradition, which led to the largest lung surgery clinic in our country offering a full range of surgeries.
Prof. Verhagen (1961) studied medicine at the Radboud University and received his doctorate degree in 1989. He specialized in cardio-thoracic surgery and was board certified in 1997. In 2014 he obtained his PhD on a thesis “Aspects of Staging in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer”.
Since 1997, Prof. Verhagen has been working as a staff member Cardio-thoracic surgery at the Radboud university medical center, with a special focus on thoracic surgery.
