Beyond the scientist: Helmi Pett

Helmi Pett.jpg

Where and when were you born?

1984 Helsinki, Finland.

Where do you live and with whom?

With Dutch boyfriend Mark, currently in Nijmegen, but will shortly move to Helsinki and work at collaborating lab there towards PhD project completion.

Who was your role model when you were a kid?

The good teachers that supported me along my education.

Why aren’t you doing the same thing now as your role model (or do you?)

Teaching is hard, and good teachers never get the societal respect they really deserve.

What is the thing in your (work or other) history that you are most proud of?

I am not really a big fan of pride, find it hard to name any specific achievement.

What is it that you would like to achieve in work in the next 5 to 10 years?

In the next 5 to 10 years I hope to complete my PhD project, and to keep working in science. I would like to somehow be able to increase people's awareness about the uncertainty of working in science for young scientists, and how having healthy well-directed investements into academia is essential for making sure we keep trying to develop. This, in my mind, involves making science also more international, on a global scale, and working more on problems that involve those that are often left out; in my case, I am specifically interested in pharmacogenetics of infectious diseases

For what can we wake you up?

For the sunrise! I love mornings.

What is your hobby and how good are you at it?

Ashtanga yoga. I am better at it now than when I first tried it, which is the only thing you really need to do in yoga; compete with yourself while also remaining within the limits of your capabilities (and not hurt yourself).

What is your biggest irritation?

Dishonesty (yes, also selectively leaving details out of the full story is a form of lying).

Who would you like to invite for dinner, if you had the chance?

Michael Palin.
