Beyond the scientist: Jan Koetsenruijter

Jan Koetsenruijter, postdoc at the Research Unit for General Practice in Aarhus.  Jan was PhD candidate at IQ healthcare.

Where and when were you born?

Born about 35 years ago in the famous town of Fijnaart, well known as the home of Franske Bauer.

Where do you live and with whom?

For the time being I live in Aarhus in Denmark. Next stop is going to be Heidelberg, so let's say, I haven't settled down at one place yet.

Who was your role model when you were a kid?

That must have been my favorite character in the Tonke Dragt book 'Brief voor de koning', Tiuri. Or maybe it is actually the writer, Tonke Dragt, because I was a fan of all her books.

Why aren’t you doing the same thing now as your role model (or do you?)

I might have many talents, but I don't consider writing to be one of them. I think I lack the imagination and creativity that is necessary. Maybe in another live  :-)

What is the thing in your (work or other) history that you are most proud of?

There is not a single thing which I am really proud of. But I am kinda proud that I made so far because I never expected that at any stage in my life. You just go from step to step and suddenly you finished your PhD and you find yourself back in another country.

What is it that you would like to achieve in work in the next 5 to 10 years?

That is a very hard question. I think I would be really pleased when I can say that I found the topic within the research world in which I would like to develop myself further.

For what can we wake you up?

I don't really like to be woken up, so you have to come up with something really good. Or better, just wait another hour.

What is your hobby and how good are you at it?

I really like to run and cycle (mountainbike and roadbike). Most proud of finishing a 50 km trailrun through the Alps last year.

What is your biggest irritation?

I am known for being easily irritated, so, where to start? As a good researcher, it annoys me when people try to reduce complex issues and pretend that they know how it all works.

Who would you like to invite for dinner, if you had the chance?

That must be Ottolenghi because I am a big fan of his recipes. On the condition that he actually cooks of course...
