Beyond the scientist:  Lennert de Ruiter

Where and when were you born?

In Geldrop in 1987.

Where do you live and with whom?

In Nijmegen-Noord, Oosterhout, Waalsprong, nót Lent, all different names for the same beautiful spot just north of the Waal. I live there with my wife Jiska.

Who was your role model when you were a kid?

If a role model is the person of whom you have a poster on your bedroom wall when you’re a kid, it’s Robby Naish. But that’s mostly because the images looked so cool. He’s one of the greats in the history of (wind)surfing.

Why aren’t you doing the same thing now as your role model (or do you?)

Well, at some point you find out you want to contribute. That sounds all wise and mature, but it’s more that I found out I was interested in a broad spectrum of topics and wanted to find a way to combine my skills and knowledge into something useful. I have a master degree in movement sciences so the interest in sports never went away.

What is the thing in your work history that you are most proud of?

With our research consortium we have the opportunity to revolutionize total knee replacement. I’m proud to be part of this group and having presented and discussed my work on numerous occasions in the orthopedic community worldwide.

What is it that you would like to achieve in work in the next 5 to 10 years?

I hope to see this project go to clinical trial within the duration of my PhD. After that, I am very much interested to see if my predictions become reality for patients. If so, after clearance, convincing surgeons to offer it to their patients would be the next step. That should cover the next 10 years…

For what can we wake you up?

Home-marinated spare ribs on the BBQ. Yes, also in the morning.

What is your hobby and how good are you at it?

Windsurfing is definitely number one. I prefer the sea; riding and jumping the waves, or trying freestyle on flat-water. Preferably with 6-7 Beaufort winds and a nice temperature. Off course, at the end of the session top this off with the above mentioned delights.

What is your biggest irritation?

The constant hurry we all seem to be in.

Who would you like to invite for dinner, if you had the chance?

The John who wrote the book of revelation.
