Pr. Beatrix Spierfonds Grant for Cell Biology

Rick Wansink (left) and Bé Wieringa (below) from the Department of Cell Biology obtained a EUR 250,000 grant from the Prinses Beatrix Spierfonds. The aim of the grant is to obtain deeper insight in the molecular pathogenesis of myotonic dystrophy, a heritable, complex neuromuscular disorder. Myotonic dystrophy is caused by an expanded (CTG)n repeat. Length of the repeat correlates with onset and severity of disease, but the precise relationship is still not well understood. In this Prinses Beatrix Spierfonds project, one healthy human muscle cell line will be genetically modified to generate an isogenic panel of cell lines expressing different (CTG)n repeat lengths. This cell panel will then be used to examine several known biomarkers for myotonic dystrophy.
