ERC Starting Grant

Personal grants such as Veni, Vidi, Vici and ERC Starting, Consolidator and Advanced Grants are considered to be strong indicators of an institute's quality and esteem. The Radboudumc research institutes therefore aims to select good candidates for such grants and try to facilitate them as good as possible with their applications.

There is an upcoming opportunity for excellent researchers being  at the career stage at which they are starting their own independent research team or programme to apply for a personal ERC Starting Grant of €1.500,000 for a period of 5 years. Applicant researchers must demonstrate the ground-breaking nature, ambition and feasibility of their scientific proposal. Please find herewith information on the application criteria and submission deadlines (internal & external).

Who can apply?

Eligible researchers should be among at least the best 5-10% of their age group who have been rewarded their first PhD at least 2 and up to 7 years prior to 1 January 2015. Talented researchers from abroad can also apply. A competitive Starting Grant researcher must have already shown the potential for research independence and evidence of maturity, for example by having produced at least one important publication without the participation of their PhD supervisor. Applicant researchers should also be able to demonstrate a promising track record of early achievements appropriate to their research field and career stage, including significant publications (as main author) in major international peer-reviewed multidisciplinary scientific journals, or in the leading international peer-reviewed journals of their respective field. They may also demonstrate a record of invited presentations in well-established international conferences, granted patents, awards, prizes etc.

How to apply?

The Radboudumc Research Institutes together with Valorization developed an internal support procedure to coach applicants through the entire writing and interview procedure:  The first step is to send an expression of interest email to Martijn.Gerretsen@Radboudumc.nl as soon as possible but no later than 13/11/2014 containing the following information:

-          Up-to-date CV (including the exact date of PhD graduation). Please use appendix 1

-          Name of the affiliated research institute (RIMLS$, RIHS, DCN)

-          Preliminary title of your application

-          Preliminary abstract

Based on the candidate's CV, the candidate will receive a personal advice on his or her anticipated chance of success. ERC Starting Grant candidates with a positive CV evaluation will be assigned a personal coach who will give feedback on the grant proposal (in addition to feedback obtained from your own department) and will have the opportunity to follow dedicated courses. The external deadline for submission is 3 February 2015, 17:00 h.

In this context, we would like to announce an ERC Information Meeting at Thursday 11 December 2014, 12:30 - 14:00h, Huygensgebouw HG00.00E. Presentations will be given by Esther Verhoeven, National Contact Point ERC, Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland, and an ERC Starting Grant laureate.

Please do not hesitate to contact Valorization (Martijn Gerretsen, 19822, or eugrants@umcn.nl) for any further questions related to the ERC Starting Grants.

With kind regards,

Guillen Fernandez, René Bindels and Bart Kiemeney
