'On your knees, Blandowski! Beg me for mercy'. Jeroen laughs. He has been asked to review a manuscript of his main competitor and ponders whether he should be fair or seize the opportunity to take revenge on his international colleague. As a busy post-doc researcher on a tenure track, Jeroen has to find a balance between his own scientific productivity, the supervision of a disappointing PhD candidate and his contributions to the department. Jeroen is a fictional character in the play Gewetenschap. On Tuesday more than 200 researchers from the Radboud university and Radboudumc attended this play that was an initiative of De Jonge Akademie. The play was followed by an animated discussion about scientific integrity and the daily dilemmas of life as a scientist. In a positive atmosphere a wide range of topics was discussed, including the challenges and alternatives of the current peer-review system, altruism in the supervision of PhD candidates and the fine balance between loyalty to the department, hierarchy and scientific integrity. The aim of Gewetenschap is to stimulate the discussion about these daily dilemmas that can affect the quality, sincerity and fun of life as a scientist.
