On Tuesday, 25th October Radboud Postdoc Initiative organized a lunch seminar “How the become an independent scientist.”

The invited speakers, Maroeska Rovers, Professor of Evidence Based Surgery and Dirk Lefeber, leader of the Glycosylation Disorders group at Radboudumc shared their own experience with building up a career in scientific research with Radboudumc postdocs.

What is needed for successful transition from postdoc to group leader? Which expertise acquired during previous training is useful? How to combine scientific career with the family? What is the motivation that drives the successful researchers? All these questions were discussed during the seminar and an informal lunch. We learned how important is to know our own motivation, select right companions and not be afraid of opportunities.

As this is about independence, inspired by the advice of Maroeska, the take home message is - “Be your own hero!”
