In the context of internationalization of the RIMLS institute, a number of awards are available for PhD students to join the PhD retreat from Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB, Barcelona, Spain). The IRB retreat, to be held 14th & 15th November 2014, will follow the same format as the RIMLS PhD retreat. The costs will be fully paid by RIMLS and IRB Institute.

  • RIMLS PhD student: PhD students should be registered in the RIMLS PhD programme.
  • Declaration of expenses: Payment will be made on the basis of actual and reasonable costs. Proof of expenses is required.

Selection procedure:

  • The RIMLS Management Team will be responsible for awarding grants.
  • Application form should include
    • Motivation: Describe your research topic and why the IRB PhD retreat is of interest to your research. For example mention specific research themes highlighted on their institute website (300 - 500 words).

The IRB Barcelona PhD Retreat aims to bring its PhD student community together to exchange experiences and knowledge. This event will include talks and poster sessions presented by and for students. Furthermore, former IRB Barcelona PhD students will be invited to give presentations on their current research, thus providing participants an insightful view into career options after IRB Barcelona. Science apart, this retreat will also serve to promote inter-programme relations through a range of fun social activities.


Scientific Programme:

•    PhD students in the final year of their PhD project:

-       Abstracts from PhD students in the final year of their PhD project are selected for an oral presentation.

-       Oral Presentation: 10-min presentation + 5-min discussion.

•    All other PhD students:

-       Poster presentation. This is not obligatory for those who started their PhD project in September 2014 or for students selected for an oral presentation.

-       Poster Walks. Students will be divided into small groups from various disciplines. Those giving oral presentations will be named chairs. Each author will present his/her poster during the poster walk. Each poster presentation will include a 5-min talk + 5-min discussion. You are requested to keep to the times limits, otherwise the session chair may intervene.

•    Invited Speakers: former IRB Barcelona PhD Students

- Oral presentation: 40-min presentation + 10-min discussion.

•    Workshop:

-    Outreach activities (Helena Gonzalez)

Social programme:

  • Pub quiz
  • Sports activity

Prizes will be awarded for: the best talk and best poster presentation
