At the international Glycobiology meeting last month in Lille (France), Walinka van Tol, Dept. of Neurology, has received a poster prize. Walinka is a 2nd year PhD student working on genetic Glycosylation Disorders.

With her research, she aims to unravel novel pathways in sugar metabolism that are required for protein glycosylation. This involves elucidation of the sugar pathways for glycosylation of the membrane-bound protein alpha-dystroglycan in muscle and brain. Patients with a genetic defect in alpha-dystroglycan glycosylation suffer from a congenital muscular dystrophy with structural brain abnormalities.
