RIHS PhD Retreat 2015

The annual RIHS PhD retreat took place on November 12th and 13th at the Hof van Wageningen. The program started on Thursday evening. After the first session of excellent oral presentations from fellow PhD students we enjoyed a scrumptious dinner. This was followed by a highly interactive talk from the keynote speaker - Wim van der Meeren, CEO of CZ. He talked about the quality of health care from the point of view of insurance companies versus health care professionals and patients. After closing the scientific part of day 1 we had a fun night out after a pubquiz from quizmaster Jon Lewis!

The following morning there was one more session of oral presentations before an active exchange of information with 3-minute 4-slide short talks. When contents of PhD projects were condensed to such a short format, there was no doubt everyone was able to follow the basic principles behind the research, no matter how different our areas of expertise are within our varied institute. There was a lot of active discussion! Lastly we all learned something new about how to make well-structured arguments from the Trivium debate club and got to try our new skills in practice with a vivid debate about organ donation and scientific integrity.

This year’s award winners for best oral presentation and best 4-slide short talk were selected by a jury panel of retreat participants. Mehmet Dalmis won the award for best oral presentation and Christiana Balta the one for the best 4-slide short talk presentations. They were both from the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine.

We would like to thank all the participants for a successful retreat! As always it was a great opportunity to get to know your fellow PhD students in the RIHS and to practice presentation skills in a comfortable environment. We hope you all enjoyed it! If you could not make it to the retreat this year, we hope to see you next autumn for the RIHS PhD Retreat 2016!
