The 21st RIMLS PhD-retreat 2015

The 21st edition of the annual RIMLS PhD retreat has been a great success! We welcomed about 200 participants, including 6 PhD students from the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) from Barcelona, at a new location with a new program.

Thirty-three final year students presented their work in parallel sessions, explaining (elements of) their PhD project in the light of the clinical background. The quality of the research and the presentations was judged by 4 senior researchers: Dr. Adrian Cohen, Dr. Sander Leeuwenburgh, Dr. Gaith Bakdash and Dr. Manou Janssen. All other PhD students experienced to present science in small groups during two poster sessions.

The new program allowed more time for networking and a novel interactive element: “The RIMLS Challenge”.  Groups of students were all given the same assignment to come up with an idea  about how to improve science in the RIMLS, which would be presented in a pitch at the end of the retreat. Marcel Wortel, senior communications advisor at the Radboudumc, gave an example on ‘the art of pitching’ and joined the jury in judging the pitches. From the pitches it became clear that the RIMLS PhD-retreat would like to have a relaxing-area where they can meet fellow student and discuss everything from science to daily life. Next to that, students would like to see an mobile application which can be used to come in contact with other Phd-students and share idea’s , technologies or experiments.

Every year we invite a influential researcher to present his or her work in a keynote lecture. This year we were lucky to have Prof. Mark Post to join the RIMLS PhD retreat. Prof. Post presented his work on artificial meet and the idea to design and produce meet from adult stem cells. His lecture was followed by a lively and interesting discussion.

Next to the scientific program, there was also time for leisure during the social program with the game of 30 seconds and a party (with DJ!) at the Metrobar. The host location of this year, the Koningshof in Veldhoven, was a great and spacious conference center with excellent service.

The organizing committee would like to thank all participants, jury members, sponsors and Prof. Mark Post for their contributions. We hope to welcome you next year at the PhD retreat 2016!
