Myotonic Dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a muscular dystrophy caused by an expansion of the (CTG)n repeat in the 3' UTR of the DM protein kinase (DMPK) gene. My research focuses on whether and how stress - or adaption to stress - caused by expansion of the (CTG)n tract and expression of (CUG)n-repeat containing DMPK mRNA compromises different aspects of proteostasis. By discriminating between aspects of proteostasis stress associated with disease and with normal ageing, we aim to derive an adequate picture of (abnormal) proteostasis in DM1 cells.
