Research interests include immunology and immunogenetics, with a specific focus on delineating processes that underlie immunological tolerance, especially in transplantation. Regulatory T cells, Natural Killer cells and the role of non-classical HLA antigens in the regulation of allo-responses are among the currently studied topics. The development of diagnostic tools and definition of biomarkers to monitor immunological tolerance is an ongoing area of interest. Current projects also include the clinical use of regulatory T cells and NK cells for immunotherapy.

Irma Joosten is Head of the Laboratory for Medical Immunology within of the Dept of Laboratory Medicine and holds the Chair for medical immunology (transplantation & transfusion).
