Profile

Research interests focus on the role of heparan sulfate and other glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in immune regulation. Current research includes analysis of GAGs in the endothelial glycocalyx of the glomerulus, i.e. the filtering compartments of the kidney, and the choroid, i.e. the sub-retinal vasculature. Furthermore, the effects of mutations in complement Factor H on its affinity for differentially sulfated heparan sulfate structures are evaluated. The project aims to develop novel treatments for complement-mediated autoimmune diseases such as atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome and age-related macular degeneration. Markus Loeven graduated in Molecular Mechanisms of Disease at the Radboud University Nijmegen in 2012 and is currently working as PhD student in the Nephrology Research Laboratory.
