Cancer development and immune defense

Leukemia is the most common form of pediatric cancer. Despite improved therapies, still a large number of patients develop therapy resistance and as a result suffer from relapsed disease. We aim to identify and characterize pathways that contribute to leukemia formation and the development of therapy resistance. This will allow us to predict and/or prevent therapy resistance and improve the overall cure rate. Laurens van der Meer (1979) is trained as a molecular biologist. He performed his thesis work the field of hematology/oncology and received his PhD in 2011. After finishing his thesis work he joined the laboratory of Pediatric Oncology to study the molecular mechanisms of therapy resistance.
