NanomedicineAlzheimer's disease

Research interests include vascular pathology and angiogenesis, with special focus on the vascular bed in cancer and Alzheimer's disease. In current projects effects of VEGF isoform expression on contrast-enhanced MRI, on metastatic rate and on the efficacy of anti-angiogenic therapy are analysed in melanoma and brain tumours. The experimental approach combines morphological analysis of both patient and animal tumour material, with experimental MRI. The Alzheimer project focuses on vascular effects of amyloid deposition and on strategies to counteract disease progress.

Robert de Waal is senior lecturer and research coordinator at the department of Pathology. He is Associate Professor in Vascular Pathology since 2002.
