Reconstructive and regenerative medicine

My research line focuses on the anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective effects of the heme oxygenase (HO) system and gasotransmitters. We demonstrated that heme induces inflammation, whereas HO-activity attenuates adhesion molecules and leukocyte binding. We recently demonstrated that by increasing bilirubin levels we could ameliorate vascular function and redox status in e.g. diabetes patients. We aim to develop novel strategies to prevent cleft lip and palate and to attenuate scar formation following injury. Hereto, we use both in vitro and in vivo models of wound healing, embryogenesis, and inflammatory networks.
