My research focuses on the Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin channel 6 (TRPM6), which is unique in the mammalian proteome through its key role in Mg2+ handling and the combined action as an ion channel and an alpha-kinase. By using a complementary array of biochemical tools and electrophysiology, I study the molecular mechanisms of TRPM6 specifically involving Mg2+-dependent regulation, identification of substrates of the remarkable alpha-kinase and the functional implications of channel phosphorylation.

Jenny van der Wijst obtained her PhD degree in Medical Science at the Radboud University Nijmegen in 2011. Subsequently, she worked as an EMBO-funded postdoctoral researcher at the lab of Dario Alessi in the MRC Protein Phosphorylation Unit, Dundee, Scotland. By obtaining a NWO Vernieuwingsimpuls Veni, she now works as a postdoc at the department of Physiology.
