Healthcare improvement science

Theme leader: Gert Westert

Patients experience large variation in quality, safety and costs. They deserve patient-centered care that contributes to their quality of life. Our focus of research is to study the structure, process and outcomes of healthcare, with the aim to improve performance and delivery of care. We study existing and new interventions, on the micro level (practitioner - patient; care facility) and macro level (local, regional, national and international networks) to find out under which circumstances interventions or structures work. Our primacy is at the direct value for the patient. We aim to further develop efficient and effective research methods and designs. We study the context, facilitators and barriers within which improvements in care around the patient can be achieved, throughout the transmural care chain.

Kramers, CornelisMany patients have several diseases and many doctors. This makes them prone to drug-drug interaction, and other drug related problems because of polypharmacy. Research interest includes medication safety both inside and outside the hospital. The role of medication reconciliation (deprescribing), education of prescribers and recognition and policy in patients visiting the emergency department because of adverse effects is taken into account. read more >>
